Respiratory Therapy

Medicare Part B respiratory therapy for skilled nursing facilities

Long-term care residents with COPD, chronic respiratory failure, and other qualifying diagnoses can receive respiratory therapy billed to Medicare Part B. Most buildings never bill it because tracking eligibility and documentation is hard to get right. CareComply finds the residents who qualify, monitors RT documentation every day, and bills under your NPI, typically $50K–$150K per facility per month.

From eligible resident to billed claim

Supply-only billing companies don’t offer respiratory therapy. We handle eligibility, compliance, and billing end to end.

1

Identify

Every resident is checked daily against your Medicare contractor’s RT diagnosis list and their Part B eligibility.

2

Treat

Your clinical team delivers therapy under orders that include the right CPT code and frequency.

3

Monitor

A daily RT Compliance Report flags missing codes, frequency problems, and missing physician notes.

4

Bill

Each month we bill every present, Part B–eligible day under your facility’s NPI.

  • Inhalation therapy and inhaler evaluation
  • Pulse oximetry
  • Biofeedback (Omniflow)

Respiratory therapy FAQ

Who delivers the respiratory therapy?

Your facility’s clinical team delivers the therapy. CareComply is the eligibility, compliance, and billing layer: we tell your team which residents qualify, check every RT order’s documentation daily, and bill the eligible days under your NPI.

How long does it take to get started?

It starts with a free sample scan of your current residents, which shows how many likely qualify. From there, we connect to PointClickCare and your team starts receiving daily eligibility and compliance reports; we’ll give you a plan in the first conversation.

What diagnoses qualify for respiratory therapy under Medicare Part B?

It depends on your Medicare Administrative Contractor. Noridian, Novitas, and Palmetto each publish the respiratory diagnoses they accept. Common examples include COPD, chronic respiratory failure, and pneumonia-related conditions. CareComply applies your contractor’s list automatically.

Can Medicare Advantage residents receive Part B RT?

Generally not billed as straight Part B. A resident on an active Medicare Advantage plan is ineligible unless the facility has an arrangement with that plan. When a resident disenrolls from Medicare Advantage, our report flags them as newly eligible.

Can a nursing home bill Medicare Part B for respiratory therapy?

Yes. For residents who are not in a covered Part A stay and meet Part B eligibility and diagnosis requirements, the SNF can bill Part B respiratory therapy services under its own NPI.

Do pulse oximetry codes need a specific diagnosis?

Yes. Pulse oximetry (94760, 94761) needs a qualifying pulse-ox diagnosis on the resident’s record. CareComply checks this daily and flags orders that would not be billable.

What documentation does Medicare require for respiratory therapy in a SNF?

An order specifying the therapy, CPT code, and frequency; a qualifying diagnosis; physician documentation of medical necessity; and administration records showing the therapy was delivered.

How is this different from a pre-billing review?

A pre-billing review finds problems after the month is over, when many of them can no longer be fixed. CareComply checks every day, so your team fixes gaps while the therapy is still being delivered.

How many of your residents qualify for RT?

A free sample scan shows how many residents in your building likely qualify for Part B respiratory therapy today, and what it’s worth each month.
